On Tuesday, June 24, 2025, Iran’s permanent representative to the United Nations delivered a powerful statement before the Security Council, reaffirming Iran’s unwavering commitment to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231.

These frameworks establish the legal and diplomatic foundation for Iran’s peaceful nuclear program. In stark contrast, the Iranian envoy condemned Israel,an entity outside the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and international regulatory frameworks, for launching military attacks against Iranian territory with the explicit backing of the United States. These attacks, he stressed, are unjustified and based on unfounded claims that Iran’s nuclear program poses an imminent threat.

The JCPOA, signed in July 2015 between Iran and the P5+1 countries (China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, the United States, plus Germany) along with the European Union, is a landmark agreement designed to ensure Iran’s nuclear program remains exclusively peaceful.

It imposes strict, verifiable limits on uranium enrichment levels, reduces Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium, and subjects Iran’s nuclear facilities to continuous monitoring by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Complementing this, UNSC Resolution 2231 formally endorses the JCPOA, calling on all UN member states to uphold its provisions. The resolution prohibits any actions that would undermine the agreement, including unilateral sanctions and military aggression, and establishes mechanisms to oversee its implementation.

The Iranian representative emphasized that Israel, which neither adheres to the NPT nor submits to international nuclear oversight, has repeatedly violated Iran’s sovereignty through military strikes targeting nuclear and civilian sites.

These attacks, supported by the United States, have resulted in significant casualties and destruction. Iran categorically rejects the baseless accusations that its nuclear program constitutes an imminent threat, highlighting Israel’s own undeclared nuclear arsenal and refusal to be held accountable under international law.

Despite these provocations, Iran reiterated its full compliance with international obligations and its peaceful nuclear intentions. It affirmed its right to legitimate self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter and declared that its armed forces remain vigilant and prepared to respond to any further aggression. Nonetheless, Iran underscored that diplomacy and dialogue remain the sole viable paths to resolving disputes, firmly rejecting war and sanctions as tools of coercion.

In conclusion, Iran’s address to the Security Council today spotlighted the glaring double standards of global powers that justify aggression against a nation abiding by international agreements. It called upon the international community to respect international law, uphold the principles of sovereignty, and pursue peaceful solutions to ensure regional stability.
